Birdwatching at the Arboretum

Join Arboretum gardener and amateur birdwatcher Greg Pongetti for a birdwatching walk through the Arboretum. Learn about the natural history, identifying characteristics, songs, and specialized adaptations of our feathered friends who visit the Arboretum. This is a great opportunity for both beginning and experienced birders—we recommend multiple walks!

Discover how easy it is to start your own home composting system! During this informative class, you’ll learn the basics of home composting and receive a FREE booklet to guide you through the learning and start-up process.
Fullerton Arboretum has been recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for its GreenScapes activities including its commitment to providing outstanding composting classes. Our instructors, Dr. Bill Roley, President of Applied Ecological Systems, and Patrick McNelly, Principal Staff Analyst for the O.C. Sanitation District, have won the nationally recognized H. Clark Gregory Award for Outstanding Grassroots Efforts to Promote Composting.

Morning Yoga in the Garden

A refreshing morning of Yoga awaits you every Saturday this spring! Come connect with nature and your spirit as you practice yoga in our beautiful garden setting. Music, spare mats, and snacks are provided.
Kim Mason is a certified yoga instructor with over 20 years of yoga experience. Her training includes Iyengar yoga, Hatha yoga, Kundalini yoga and various types of meditation. Her clients include Team Survivor, Anaheim Achieves, Irvine Public Schools Foundation and Nickelodeon.
4 classes for $52/members $60/nonmembers

Our rainbow gardener Julie Johnston will lead you through our delightful spring garden as you touch, taste and smell the rainbow of flowers and vegetables. You’ll even get to plant your very own seed!
To help build on this learning experience, each group will receive a Rainbow Garden Packet that includes lessons for teaching the growing cycle of plants and instructions on caring for newly planted seeds.

Monster Tomato and Pepper Sale

The Fullerton Arboretum will be hosting its annual “Monster Tomato and Pepper Sale” at The Potting Shed, located on the grounds of the Arboretum, March 19- 22, 2009. This is the largest annual plant sale in the region focusing exclusively on tomato and pepper plants. Over 200 varieties of tomato plants will be for sale this year, including every size from currant to beefsteak and every color from white to black. Over 90 varieties of peppers will be available this year.

How to Grow the Best Tomatoes with Steve Goto

Just in time to help you get the most out of our annual Monster Tomato and Pepper Sale*, third generation nurseryman and tomato expert Steve Goto visits the Fullerton Arboretum to share his best practices and tips for growing great tomatoes. Steve’s course includes “Tomato 101” topics, growing tomatoes organically, and an introduction to Heirloom Tomato varieties. Come listen for Steve’s tomato-related secrets and specific recommendations based on our Tomato Sale list.

A celebrated guest speaker, Steve Goto has been researching and growing tomatoes since 1982 and runs the family business at Goto Nursery. Currently, Steve grows over 100 varieties of Heirloom tomatoes at the request of customers.
* Members-Only Tomato Sale starts at 3:00 pm on Thursday, March 18 following the class. Nonmembers attending the class will have the opportunity to join the Arboretum and take advantage of this special sale. Sale opens to the general public Friday, March 19 at 9:00 am.

Off-Site Adventures: Wildflower Field Trips

with Chris Barnhill, Fullerton Arboretum Collections Curator
Known for its native plant diversity and particularly beautiful wildflower displays, Southern California will be an excellent place to explore this spring. Fullerton Arboretum is pleased to offer two field trip opportunities this year led by Chris Barnhill, Fullerton Arboretum Collections Curator.
These trips are designed to engage both avid wildflower enthusiasts as well as those just eager to spend a day enjoying the beauty of our natural surroundings. Trip locations are determined according to best current seasonal blooms. Participants will enjoy in-depth guided tours of local plant communities at each destination and a scenic break for lunch. Bring your camera and join us as we go into the field to view, photo, and identify nature’s glory of spring.

The City of Fullerton is pleased to offer the following outdoor class to Fullerton residents at reduced cost in support of climate-friendly landscaping.
Learn how to incorporate succulents into your garden and see how stunning water conservation can be! Collections Curator Chris Barnhill will lead residents on a design-focused tour of the Arboretum’s Desert Gardens where participants will learn first-hand about a variety of architectural plants and unique plant combinations that substantially reduce dependency on water for landscaping. Class includes plant list, instruction on pairing appropriate plants, and examples of how natural hardscape can help carry a garden through the seasons and compliment your plants. Bring a notebook to map out your new landscape as you go.
